The summer season is approaching and as the trend has been for years, rumors always start circulating about higher gas prices around this time. It's May right now and there are already talks of gas being in the four dollar range. As this annual consumerist wallet rape starts taking effect, always reminding the faithful customers that we are their spineless-devout and loyal puppets, while they are the rabid and frothing-at-the-mouth petrolium wolves. Within cities around the country gas prices sky-rocket for almost no other reason than just because.
Don't you kind of feel cheated since you buy gas all year round and still their greedy asses want more? I know you do! So what can we do?
As it always does around the same time that gas prices rise, e-mails and messages of that sort start circulating as well. These e-mails stating that May 15th is the day. THE DAY. Our day of protest. The people's day of protest to show those greedy assholes that we are actually the ones in power. That's right. We have the power. But is this enough?
Every year May 15th is chosen to boycott gas. But does it really work? Is it effective enough to actually make a difference? I highly doubt it. Boycotting the gas companies on this day is a novel idea, but we should do our part to lower gas prices by minimizing our altogether fossil fuel consumtion.
Not pumping gas on one day will make the oil company's revenues go down for that day, but the day before and/or the day after very well could see a spike in sales as people are preparing to not buy gas the day before or people are filling up the day after.
While it doesn't hurt to try, trying is still trying... and not doing. It's a good way to make ripples, but don't we want to make waves? To show those companies that we won't take their shit anymore. WE HAVE THE POWER, NOT THEM! We just have to regain control. We cannot allow them to fuck with us like this or prices will just keep sky-rocketing. Because of this, we have a few solutions to start with.
Instead of just stopping buying gas on a certain day:
TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION DAILY
Public transportation is a good way to start. While it still consumes fuel, it minimizes the amount of vehicles on the road, not only clearing the roadways for faster travel, but also effectively lowering the consumption rate.
ONLY FILL UP WITH MINIMAL AMOUNTS OF GAS
Keep the oil company's weekly/biweekly/monthly gas income at a low. This should drop profits dramatically.
USE INDEPENDENT GAS COMPANIES
While it's not proven that it'll make any kind of difference, but using independent gas comepanies may result in positive effects from the small guys. Maybe they'll notice the increase in sales and lower prices since they're stealing all their competitor's revenue. This should be used only as a last resort, as it is just an idea. It's still a start!
CARPOOL AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
Carpooling, as is the same with public transportation, will clear the roads and minimize fuel consumption. Only minimal amounts of fuel required. So if you're headed to the same place as others, holla at them and pile into a vehicle like the bunch of clowns that you are!
PURCHASE AND DRIVE A HYBRID VEHICLE
Do I have to explain this one? Minimal amounts of fuel needed as it runs off of electricity as well.
DON'T DRIVE TO ONLY GO A FEW MILES OR LESS
If only going a few miles or so, don't drive. That's a waste of resources. Instead, take a bike, walk, run, skateboard, or rollerblade. It's travel, but it's also exercise (keep you in good health) and recreation! When was the last time you got on your skateboard/rollerblades? Havn't you been meaning to start skating again? Or if it's not vital, don't go out at all. Stay in and play video games, listen to music, get some sleep, eat a salad, have sex... whatever. If it isn't necessary to leave the house, then just stay in. You don't need that candy bar that bad, do you?
BOYCOTT THE GAS COMPANIES ON MAY 15TH
Again, it's not proven that it'll work since people will fill up before or after this day, but, who knows... maybe it'll get their attention. Maybe this could be the first step in the whole movement. Get their attention and then follow through with the other ideas.
BOYCOTT GAS COMPANIES MORE THAN JUST ONE DAY A YEAR (TWICE A MONTH?)
We want to get our point across, don't we? So we should take it upon ourselves to designate atleast two days out of each month to not buy gas(the fifteenth and the twenty-eighth for example. I chose the twenty-eighth due to the fact of not all months having enough days). Don't you want to make waves, not ripples? While ripples can be a good start, that's all it is. A start. Even though this idea, in itself, is not a complete solution and maybe also just a start... it'll prove more effective.
ALL OF THESE SOLUTIONS WILL HELP. IF YOU CAN'T DO ALL OF THEM ATLEAST DO ONE. IF YOU CAN DO ONE, TRY DOING TWO OF THEM. TRY SLOWLY INTEGRATING ALL OF THEM INTO YOUR LIVES UNTIL THE OIL COMPANIES TAKE NOTICE AND THEIR WHOLE CO-OP CRUMBLES.
JUST REMEMBER: IT'S A CHANGE AND CHANGE DOESN'T COME EASY. IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS, YOU'RE GOING TO STRUGGLE AND THAT'S ALRIGHT BECAUSE IT'S NECESSARY TO STRUGGLE FOR A CAUSE. WITHOUT A STRUGGLE THERE CAN BE NO CHANGE.
AND IF YOU'RE CONCERNED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT ALSO, ALL OF THESE SOLUTIONS ARE ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY!!! SO IT'S A WIN-WIN SITUATION!
And Lastly, repost this to all your friends! Change starts with you. Even if you're not willing to compromise your normal mode of transportation, maybe your friends are! |
